Giinbay is our Gamilaraay word for the small freshwater mussels which were once abundant in our rivers, creeks and waterholes. Due to agricultural practices, particularly cotton farming and the commodification of our water our rivers are dying and our freshwater mussel populations are in serious decline. They are a shy creature that act as a filtration system, living under the mud at the bottom of the rivers etc. They can live for up to 100 years.
